Phase 1: Introduction
Jackie : Welcome, everybody. Thank you for joining us, I am Yuan Huanglin; please call me Jackie . I am a freshman in Economics D epartment of this school . I am Chinese. A nd this Yumiko Nagata.
Yumiko : Hi, everybody, I am I'm Yumiko Nagata. Please call me ‘Yumiko'. I'm third-year student. My major is economics. I'm from Kyoto , but now I live in Mastuoka near here. I hope this tour will be nice. Please enjoy this tour with us!! Nice to meet you!!
Jackie : So, how can we call you? … Okay, in the next 50 minutes, we will guide you around the campus. At the same time we will introduce the buildings of the young university. Hope everybody will be joyful tour. I will tell you the general route. ★ We will start at Room 207 , go straight in this way (point ing to the Administrator Building ), then we will turn to the center of the Common Lecture B uilding on left. There will be Room 208 which is the TV classroom in our school. Then we will go downstairs and walk towards the Administrator Building . That is the main offices in our school. By the ramp we will come back to the second floor again to this side of the long red bridge . We will pass the bridge and go towards the Intercommunication Center which locates in another side of the campus. Then we will continue to go to the Students Union Building which including the shop, restaurant and the rest area. You can also find the club rooms there. Walking through the corridor (hallway) , we will enter the Information Center . That will be the main spot in our tour.
★ By the way, on our tour we won't enter the other three buildings which are Economics Building, Nursing Building and the Biologic Building, because there are only offices, classrooms or labs. But I will give you some brief introductions when we pass them or where we can see them clearly.
Yumiko : Okay, now through the glass, we can see three buildings in our front, the left is the Biologic Building , and this is the Economics Building , the one on our right is the Common Lecture Building .
Phase 2: Body of the Tour
Jackie : This way please. Far away in font of us , it is the Administrator Building . But we will turn left first and Yumiko will introduce you the Common Lecture Building .
Yumiko: Okay, please look at first floor. That's Rest space. (Pointing to the first floor) Many students often use this space, because near here, there are a lot of lecture rooms. It's convenient to wait friends or have lunch. It's allowed smoking in this space. Sunny day, you can feel expansive, with fresh air and sunshine from the big windows. ★ Near here, there're many common lecture rooms. It contains 4 big rooms that capacity is 350, and 8 medium size rooms and 6 small rooms. Mostly, big room is used for main economic lectures and liberal arts subject. We often hear the lecture in this room. Small room is usually for English. For English, we have another special room, like L.L.Room. Each room is provided video and monitor system. So we can be easy to understand, by using these equipments. We will introduce the L.L.Room when we pass it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Jackie: Next we will go to Room 208. Our school has two campuses, one is this Fukui Campus and the other one is the Obama Campus. About 1500 students study here, Fukui Campus and 150 students who are Marin biology students study in Obama Campus, but they have to spend first year here, and then go to study there. It takes bout 2 hours by car to get there. Obama campus is smaller than this campus but there're many laboratories, having up-to-date equipments. Obama campus is located near the sea. I think it's the best place to research for Marin biology students. And that's why the university built the second campus there. But sometimes the students there have to have the common lecture and it is inconvenience for teacher to give lecture twice in two different places. So we use the TV Room 208 to have lectures. It contains a video system, which is installed the high-speed network connected the Obama campus. So the students in another side of campus can know what say and write. So both campuses' students can have same lessons at the same time. It's quit useful, I think.
(Start from the front of Room 208, walking and introducing the THREE MAIN BUILDING .)
Jackie: well, please look at this way, now we can see the three main buildings of our university. This is … (name of each building). You can see the Faculty of Biology on your left side. This building contains professor's rooms and many laboratories, having many types of the newest equipment for research. Lately many forth grade students are researching for their final paper by using these labs until night. The labs in thAnd you can see the tallest building in this university over there.
and you can see the red bridge crossing the pools and main enter of the campus. When I first see the introduction of my school, I was impressed very much by this bridge, I think it is quite modern design and I guess the university must invite a famous architect to build our campus.
Yumiko : The two-floor management office is the heart of the school, where located the top manager of the school. (The schoolmaster's house is on the second floor.) Everyday, the officers are busy doing with the sundry duties such like the lecture and classroom changes, the club activities and so on.
Jackie : Beside the open office on the first floor, there are three large boards which take important effects to every student and teacher. After class, you will often see that many students round the boards to see whether there is any change of their lectures. If certain professor wants to call some students, they can also post a note here as it had already been a habit that everybody will come here at least one time everyday. You can also look for much information of accession, oversea studying, international communications, and more that help you enlarge your vision. As I am an oversea student, I can pick up the Chinese newspaper there freely, form which I can know many hotspot of my country.
Okay, let's go upstairs and cross the red bridge . You see, it is a long bridge. On your left you can see the main entrance of the campus. Far away it is the Matsuoka Chou, that road is the 8 th Nation Road . And even you can see the Loson shop there. On your right, it is the center of the campus and you can see many pools connected together. Well, in my imagine Japanese very like put water into their design 思维, just like spring, small river which across their building. So the school is, but I suggest you not walking through on that way after the sunset as it is a lit bit dangerous at night, especially on winter, covered with thick snow.
Ok, now we entered the Community Canter. It is a three-floor building. (Although now we can just see two floors.) The big room on the first floor can contain about 700 people and in it university often holds annul conferences such like the commencement. Every year, when the new year of school begins, all freshmen will take part the new-year-ceremonial to begin their four-year study. On the University-homepage's introduction, this center is intended to promote public access to the University and international exchange. Various activities are offered including extension lectures, meetings of academic societies, speeches and symposia. Several months ago, the NHK bass music philharmonic played a successful performance there and many people from the nearby provinces had taken part in it.
Let's turn right here. After we pass this road, we will enter the Students Clubs Building . (When we pass the crossing, we can see the gym's door) Now please look at this way, that door is the entrance of gym. On the second floor the c linic of university and the Students Union. Look down here, it is the rest area in front of the shop and restaurant. Everyday noon , lots of students sit here and have a rest. In fact, the area below us is a shop, which sells books, food and others. It is really a helpful shop as almost all students book new 教材 here. Let's go on.
We will go to the most peaceful place in school—the Information Center . This way please. (Walking through the corridor)
Yumiko : Especially we want to emphasize we can go these faculties without passing outside, that is, these building are connected with one hall on the second floor. Not only these faculties, but also all of the buildings in the university are connected. So if it snows a lot or rainy day, we don 't need the umbrella and can go every room comfortably. As me, I don't use it so much because it sometimes takes l ong time than cross the field.
Jackie : (At the corner of the library.) Now, we can see the library here. If it is on weekdays, when you pass by, you will see the students busy studying here. The second floor has more book shelf than the first one, and come here you can see the video teaching corner. When I first came here, I was attracted by the corner as I can see soooo many movies here!! So I like it very much, I guess you can find me here if I am free.
Yumiko : Let go on. Well, now we can see the big hall of the Information Center from our right side. In from of us, we will take a look at the computer rooms. (Walk towards the room, open the door) Ok, this is one of the school's computer rooms, as we can see; it has about 60 computers which are connected by the hi-speed network. The University had just updated the hardware (P3 800) and the software (Windows 2000 professional) last year. So we can say that it is ahead of time . The speed of the Internet here is much higher than the ADSL which is now very popular; students here can search the necessary information expediently.
Jackie : Okay, we will go downstairs. … Now we are standing in front of the library. In front of the door, the newspaper corner provides us every day's newspaper in different languages, such like ‘THE TIMES', ‘Asahi Sinbun' and so on. Although today we cannot enter the library, form the door we can have a look of the inside of it. This library is updated every month, many new books are bought by school, and student who cannot find the needed book or video can book them at the office. You can see that in the first floor half of it located the seats for readers, and the most inside is the dictionary shelf. I found it very useful because I can find Chinese, English Japanese and other dictionaries in many languages.
Yumiko : The equipments in or out of the library is very self-contained. You can copy any pages in it, also containing the video and tapes. The computer searching system help you to find the book you want as fast as possible, if you cannot remember the number, just print it out!
Jackie : Well, everybody please look at this way. The large building behind the shop is the school gym . Well, as we see, it has a very special outside. In my opinion, it has the most modern design in all buildings in my school. In it, we often have physical trainings like basketball, volleyball, handball and tennis. It is a multifunctional gym and you can do some exercises every daytime. On the aisle on second floor, school prepared a series of training machines for students. And we can freely use them or other balls in the gym. On the top of the gym, all the windows and curtains can be closed opened automatically. Even if it is in winner, the temperature inside is also suitable for exercising. The same as many gyms, it has the bath rooms, change rooms. But what is different is that Jyudo classroom is also located in it. I think only in Japan it is common that a gym contains a Jyudo classroom. Isn't it?
Yumiko : Okay, let's go on, enter that shop. (Because it is so cold that day) (Enter the building)We will just pause for a moment. On that side (point to east), there are the shop, cash machines and the rest corner. And on this side (turn around) it is the restaurant . Every noon , it is the most cheerful place in the school.
Yukomi : That is the Faculty of Economics . Can you see the mark at the top of the building? That's our school symbol. It was drawn a bird, called 'stugumi' and tree which shows power and courage. There are many proffers rooms on economics and liberal arts over third floor, and we usually use first and second floor for our seminal of economics every week. One of our school's characteristics is that we can have a chance to study in small groups, like seminal, when we are the freshman. For that, we also use these rooms. For that we are able to be familiar with members and teachers. We have economics' computer rooms where we can use 24hours!! Students can use computer and access the internets whenever we want to though we need student ID to enter the room.
Jackie : Could you see the building behind the faculty of Economics? That is Faculty of Nursing and Welfare . This faculty founded in1999. Before that, the faculty was junior college. There are five floors and contains teacher's rooms lecture rooms and training rooms, having up-to-date equipments.
Jackie : (Passing the hall and stop to look at the rest space.) Many students often use this space, as there are many lecture rooms around here; it's convenient to wait friends, seeing the boards. You can feel expansive. There is variety of lecture rooms around here. The capacity is from 60 to 300.
(Passing the hall)
Yukomi : You'll see the Central office on your left side. It has main information board. Almost everyday we have to check the main board to get the information about lecture and other news there.
And we're going to straight, and it is room 207!! We introduced you almost my university. Do you have any questions?
We have walked around the cause and it took us 20 minutes without long pauses. So we guess it may take us 40 or 50 minutes to finish all introduce.
Thank you again for joining us, everybody!
Parking Area
This is the main entrance. Can you see the Parking area over there?
It's the biggest parking area. Our school has 4 large parking areas.
So 1200 cars are available for parking. Surprisingly, it's free and
opened 24 hours!! I think it's very convenient because other
universities don't have much space for parking. Many students in this
university come to school by car. But in snowy day, it's very hard to
come here by car.
Can you see the field? We usually use the place for sport club
activity. Sometimes, football club play soccer in this field. One of
unique clubs, paraglide club also practices once a week except winter.
In the winter, it's snowy in Fukui . The first year that I came to
Fukui , I was very surprised at heavy snow, while I enjoy snow day. In
Kyoto , we can hardly see the snow, but in Fukui , it's almost snow
during winter.
As you know, this is slope. And elevators put in other places. So
disabled people can go everywhiere.
Mastuoka Town
Look over there. You can see the main entrance. If you go straight
along this road, you can reach Cooking school, hairdresser's school
and Fukui Medical University . Cooking school is also opened restaurant
‘ Sunny Side'. It's located in 5 minuets walk from here. Sometimes
professors go to have dinner there. I have been to that restaurant. I
think it's good, I recommend you that restaurant. As there're many
university in Mastuoka, so Mastuoka Town is called ‘College Area'.
Many students live in Mastuoka Town , and me too. Recently big shopping
center is opened and built many convenient stores near here, so it's
getting convenient. But I think if you live in Mastuoka, you need a
car!!
In this space, we can see all of the University. We explain whole
school.
